How Many Ciscoes Are Needed for Stocking in the Laurentian Great Lakes?

چکیده

Abstract Historically, Cisco Coregonus artedi and deepwater ciscoes spp. were the most abundant ecologically important fish species in Laurentian Great Lakes, but anthropogenic influences caused nearly all populations to collapse by 1970s. Fishery managers have begun exploring feasibility of restoring throughout basin, questions regarding hatchery propagation stocking remain. We used historical contemporary stock-recruit parameters previously estimated for Ciscoes Wisconsin waters Lake Superior, with estimates age-1 rearing habitat (broadly defined as total hectares ? 80 m depth) natural mortality, estimate how many fry (5.5 mo posthatch), fall fingerling (7.5 (at least 12 posthatch) hatchery-reared are needed Lakes mimic recruitment rates a lake that has undergone some recovery. Estimated densities suggested basin-wide would require at 6.41 × 108 fry, 4.69 fingerlings, or 3.43 simultaneous restoration effort targeting historically spawning areas Huron, Michigan, Erie, Ontario, Saint Clair. Numbers required considerably greater than current planned coregonine production capacity, thus is likely not feasible. Provided conditions do preclude restoration, could maximize effectiveness available capacity concentrating efforts areas, similar Saginaw Bay, Huron. Other within each (listed no particular order) include 1) Thunder Bay 2) Green 3) islands near Sandusky, Ohio, western 4) area Hamilton, Quinte Ontario. Our study focused entirely on may provide framework describing future needs ciscoes.

Meteotsunamis in the Laurentian Great Lakes

The generation mechanism of meteotsunamis, which are meteorologically induced water waves with spatial/temporal characteristics and behavior similar to seismic tsunamis, is poorly understood. We quantify meteotsunamis in terms of seasonality, causes, and occurrence frequency through the analysis of long-term water level records in the Laurentian Great Lakes. The majority of the observed meteots...

Paleolimnological comparison of the Laurentian Great Lakes based on diatoms

We used cluster analysis to compare records of diatom succession recorded in dated cores from offshore basins of the five Great Lakes. Most recently deposited samples from Lakes Erie and Ontario are far removed from the cluster centroid, as are samples deposited in Lakes Huron and Michigan during forest clearance. Most recently deposited samples from Lake Superior are also clearly segregated, b...

How many microbiology consultants are needed?

It is difficult to measure medical staff workload and medical staff requirements in microbiology departments. A review of 14 job descriptions for consultant microbiologists showed that the number of hospital beds and the number of specimens are more reliable workload indices than the population figure. Ratios between beds or specimens and medical staff numbers may help to identify understaffed ...

How Many Oblivious Transfers Are Needed for Secure Multiparty Computation?

Oblivious transfer (OT) is an essential building block for secure multiparty computation when there is no honest majority. In this setting, current protocols for n ≥ 3 parties require each pair of parties to engage in a single OT for each gate in the circuit being evaluated. Since implementing OT typically requires expensive public-key operations (alternatively, expensive setup or physical infr...
